Chain Link Fencing: What To Know About Repairs And Maintenance

Anna Mason

The metal material used for a chain link fence will be coated with vinyl or aluminum. While the purpose of the coating will be to prevent maintenance and repairs over the year, there are still some things you need to do to the fencing material. Here is what you need to know about chain link repairs and maintenance.

Cleaning Debris

Chain link material will become dirty from time to time. While the coating should protect the material from forming rust, it is still a good idea to clean it. For example, your lawn mower can spray grass clippings all over the fence, leaving pieces of grass on the material.

All you need to do is spray the material down with your hose if it does become dirty. There is no reason to break out the soap and water to actually scrub the fence down. This may be necessary for homeowners that picked a lighter-colored vinyl coating where the dirt really stands out, but other chain link material should be fine.

Washing Privacy Slats

The only time that you'll need to give a chain link fence a deep cleaning is if you use privacy slats. These are pieces of vinyl or metal that weave between the metal links, transforming the fence into a more solid material that gives privacy. Unfortunately, this creates a lot more surface area that can become dirty over the years.

You can wash these slats using a cleaning solution that has bleach and water in it. Dip a bristle brush into the cleaning solution, and scrub the fence with it. This helps kill off any bacteria on the fence. Just make sure to spray down nearby plants with water before you do any cleaning, and then spray them down after to wash off any of the cleaning solution that may have fallen on them.

Checking For Damage

While your fencing material will be very resistant to damage, things can still happen to the chain link material. It is possible to have damaged metal links or a bent top rail, which are problems that are easy to repair. Privacy slats can also become damaged from lawn equipment, such as a weed trimmer scratching up the surface. If your fence is close to a BBQ grill, be aware that the heat can damage the vinyl privacy slat material, as well.
